Eguavoen identifies one weak area Super Eagles need to work on after Guinea-Bissau win

The 2013 Afcon kings have won three matches on the trot, the only side to have achieved that in Cameroon, but their boss insists they are not the finished product just yet

Interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen has revealed a significant weakness on the Super Eagles, which they must strengthen to brighten their chances of winning the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

Eguavoen is still not impressed with the Eagles’ attack, especially in finishing off created opportunities, despite the team recording a comfortable 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau in Garoua on Wednesday.

The 56-year-old tactician left attacking trio Taiwo Awoniyi, Samuel Chukwueze, and Joe Aribo entirely out of the match and only introduced Moses Simon from the bench.

Still, Nigeria dominated Guinea-Bissau with more than 60 per cent of the ball possession, firing ten shots, six of which were on target. With a more efficient striker in attack, the Eagles could have scored one or two more goals against the African Wild Dog.

Overall, the Super Eagles have scored six goals in three games. Still, Eguavoen laments the team’s inability to finish their chances and wants them to do better with sterner opponents awaited in the knockout stages.

“We always create chances,” Eguavoen told ESPN.

“The problem is finishing them off. That is what we have to keep working on as we go further.”

With the win over Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria became the only team in Cameroon to have won all their three group stage matches.

The Super Eagles will next face the third-placed team in Group E or F in a round of sixteen clash on Sunday, January 23.
