AFCON 2021: Nigeria aim to end 29-year unwanted record against Egypt- Match Preview

The three-time African champions are already assured of a place in the Round of 16, but they have received a massive boost ahead of the knockout rounds

Nigeria have received a huge boost ahead of their final Group D match against Guinea-Bissau in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations after Chidozie Awaziem returned to training.

Awaziem has missed Nigeria’s first two games in the competition. The Alanyaspor defender missed the two wins against Egypt and Sudan due to an ankle injury.

He has not trained with the squad since they arrived in Cameroon. However, the 25-year-old trained for the first time with the team on Monday ahead of the final group game against Guinea-Bissau.

Awaziem’s return is a timely boost for the Super Eagles coach Austin Eguavoen. Although the defensive pairing of William Troost-Ekong and Kenneth Omeruo has excelled in his absence, Awaziem’s versatility provides more options for the team.

Nonetheless, it remains to be seen if Eguavoen will include him in the team’s starting lineup against Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday.

The Super Eagles have already secured the top spot in Group D.

The super Eagles of Nigeria could have scored more goals in the ongoing competition if they had not been selfish in front of goals. The coaching staff should tell the players when to shoot at the goal post and when to cut back passes the enable well placed players to take shots at the goalkeeper. Team honors are better than individual brilliance.
