AFCON 2021: Super Eagles defender set to miss the clash against Sudan

The three-time African champions will be seeking their second win at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations when they take on the Falcons of Jediane

Alanyaspor defender Chidozie Awaziem is set to miss the second consecutive game for Nigeria at the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon.

Awaziem missed Nigeria’s opening victory against Egypt on Tuesday. The 25-year-old was not even in the matchday squad, with interim boss Austin Eguavoen confirming after the match that Awaziem had a slight knock.

It was hoped that Awaziem would be available on Saturday, but he missed the team’s recovery training on Wednesday.

Soccernet gathered that the ex-Nantes defender missed the training as he is currently under the weather, although it is not Covid-19 related.

And with the Super Eagles playing again on Saturday, Awaziem is racing against time to be involved. In his absence, Kenneth Omeruo partnered with William Troost-Ekong at centre back as Nigeria kept a clean sheet against Egypt.

Although Omeruo also picked up an injury in the match, he is expected to be fit for the game against Sudan after he was pictured in training.

A win for Nigeria will seal their place in the knockout rounds.
