AFCON 2021: Eguavoen waiting on five players as Iheanacho arrives at the Super Eagles camp

The interim boss has been preparing the team ahead of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, but five players are still yet to arrive

Leicester City attacker Kelechi Iheanacho is the latest player to arrive at the Super Eagles camp, but interim boss Austin Eguavoen is still waiting on five players.

Iheanacho arrived on Tuesday to bring the total number of players in camp to 23. Fellow Leicester player Wilfred Ndidi also arrived on Tuesday, but earlier.

Vice-captain William Troost-Ekong is also in camp alongside West Brom’s Semi Ajayi. Ajayi was called up as a replacement for Leon Balogun, who dropped out of the squad due to an injury.

Torino’s Ola Aina is also part of the players that have arrived alongside Alex Iwobi, Frank Onyeka and Kelechi Nwakali.

However, despite the growing number, Eguavoen is still expecting five players ahead of the competition, which begins on January 9.

Joe Aribo, Odion Ighalo, Tyronne Ebuehi, Samuel Chukwueze and Jamilu Collins are the players yet to arrive at the camp.

It is unclear why Aribo has not arrived, but Chukwueze is yet to link up with the squad because he played for Villarreal in their league game against Levante on Monday.

Nonetheless, the five players are expected to be in camp on Tuesday as the Super Eagles continue their preparation for the biennial competition.

Nigeria will be going for a fourth AFCON title when the competition kicks off on Sunday. Eguavoen’s men begin their quest with a titanic clash against seven-time champions Egypt on Tuesday.

  • The Coach should call up Cyriel Dessers for Odion Jude Igahlo replacement now that we still have the time.

    Thanks!
