AFCON 2021: Alex Iwobi reveals his best position

The Super Eagles midfielder is already 25 years old, but many are still confused as to his best position on the pitch

Super Eagles player Alex Iwobi has revealed that he prefers to play from the number 10 role, but he is open to playing other positions.

The former Arsenal man’s best position has always been a subject of debate. Throughout his entire career, he has played in different positions- right and left-wing, attacking midfield, Central midfield and even wing-back at Everton.

But he has hardly put up consistent performances in any of those positions. In the national team, Iwobi started as a number 10, and with the Jay Jay Okocha connection, he was expected to take over the play-maker role from Mikel Obi.

However, his performances were not consistent. In Nigeria’s final game against Guinea-Bissau, the Everton man played as a winger until the dying embers of the match when he drifted into the creative midfield role.

He later stated that he enjoys playing in that position.

“My preferred position is number 10, but whenever I’m told to play, I give my best,” Iwobi stated as per Modo Victor.

Iwobi has played just two times for Nigeria at AFCON 2021, but he will hope to play a role when the three-time AFCON kings take on Tunisia in the second round on Sunday.

  • Iwobi has taken too long to convince in No.10 position... he is no longer the choice for us. Apart from the fact that he can do some fancy footworks from time to time... Iwobi does not have the right energy for that position and has a very weak shooting and deadballs technique... he just cannot do it!
