The continental championship already has its commencement date shifted twice, but it could now suffer a total cancellation
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is reportedly close to cancelling the 33rd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, slated for Cameroon early next year.
According to information reported by the authoritative RMC Sport in France, the continent’s football governing body has begun engaging stakeholders, and it could announce the decision to cancel the competition in the coming hours.
While the official decision has not yet been communicated, the reason for the cancellation can be linked with the organizational difficulties related to Covid-19 and its new Omicron variant.
The potential cancellation would be good news to many English clubs who have not hidden their discontent with losing important players in the coming weeks.
African players called up by their respective national teams are expected to observe a quarantine upon their return to the UK, which would force the various clubs to be deprived of their services for a longer period.
Everton’s Alex Iwobi, Leicester City duo of Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho, Watford’s Emmanuel Dennis and William Troost-Ekong, and Brentford’s Frank Onyeka are the Nigerian internationals in the Premier League.
Rangers Joe Aribo, Leon Balogun, and Calvin Bassey also play in the Scottish Premiership.
Initially scheduled for mid-2021, the Afcon date was first shifted back to January 2021 due to climatic conditions before the coronavirus pandemic forced it to be moved to January 2022.
The Super Eagles are among the 24 teams to have qualified for the Afcon, with the three-time champions already drawn in Group D alongside Egypt, Sudan, and Guinea-Bissau.
Algeria are the tournament’s defending champions following their victory over Senegal in the final of the 2019 edition held in Egypt.
Nigeria, then led by German coach Gernot Rohr, finished third after beating Tunisia in the bronze medal match.

While cancelling the competition, is because of covid19? The European football body do not stop the league, champions league and other sports from taken place . This just one of our black brain and inferiority complex. It's be shameful thing if it will be Africans that will be paying for suffering of westerners. CAF has declared us as ball boy to English and European leagues.
I agree. Is sad how Africa be little themselves.
This really want to make me cry, for seeing my continent being controlled and decided for.

This tournament must hold, be shouldn't allow inferiority complex to drive us into making damaging decisions..CAF should be wise
If CAF fail to see the tournament held, it is a disgrace to African continent.
It will be a very good pleasure to see the AFCON cancelled. Cameroon don't deserve to host this tournament let them fix their country crisis first because i was scared in the first place i don't want to loss our players.
It used to be, now it is that mental slavery has gained momentum. Africa Unite! Emancipate yourself from mental slavery!! Save Africa!!!
We cameroonians are telling the entire world and Africa particularly that Europe are not the ones dictating to caf, when we look at the risks linked to the corona virus, Cameroon and Africa are better off than Europe where their leagues have been going on unperturbed, let's stand as one man and stand by caf come January to kick start the 33rd afcon in Cameroon, long live African football
Why most africa rulers are selling africa people to so call white supremacy as them call their self, the European league still continue but you africa rulers want to cancel Afcon because of ur selfish interest all this so called africa rulers should stop selling us as slave to other continent africa cup of nations most hold come January, africa is not cold like Europe continent Covid survive in cold not heat like africa
