Super Eagles roundup: Musa brilliant for Fatih, heartbreak for Ndidi, Akpeyi keeps a cleansheet

There was more club football action across various domestic competitions, and some Nigerian stars were involved for their teams

Soccernet brings a lowdown of some Nigerian stars that played for their clubs in the final round of games before the Christmas break.

In Turkey, Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa delivered an impressive shift as Fatih Karagumruk held Fenerbahce to a 1-1 draw in their Super Lig clash on Wednesday.

Musa set up Aleksandar Pešić in the 31st minute to put Fatih ahead. The Nigerian could also have had a goal to his name but was denied on one occasion by Fenerbahce goalkeeper.

But Musa and his teammates were denied the victory after former Arsenal midfielder restored parity for the away side from the penalty spot in the 40th minute.

Meanwhile, in England, Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi suffered a heartbreaking loss to Liverpool in their Carabao Cup encounter at Anfield.

Iheanacho was a second-half substitute while Ndidi played the whole encounter. Leicester appeared to be cruising to a shock win after Jamie Vardy put them two goals up inside the opening 20 minutes.

Oxlade-Chamberlain pulled one back for the Reds, but James Maddison’s stunner restored the Foxes two-goal lead.

Diogo Jota reduced the deficit again in the second half, but just as it looked like Brendan Rodgers would secure progress into the next round, Takumi Minamino levelled the scores for Liverpool in the fifth minute of added time.

Minamino’s strike meant the tie went into penalties, which Liverpool won.

In another Carabao Cup encounter, Frank Onyeka came on in the second-half but he could not prevent Brentford from a 2-0 loss to Chelsea.

In Italy, Tyronne Ebuehi was in action for the whole 90 minutes, but Venezia suffered a 3-1 home loss to Lazio in their final league game of the year.

Ola Aina also featured for Torino at the San Siro, but Ivan Juric’s men lost 1-0 to champions Inter Milan.

In South Africa, Daniel Akpeyi kept a clean sheet as Kaizer Chiefs bounced back from Sunday’s disappointment with a 2-0 win over Maritzburg United.

It was Akpeyi’s fifth clean sheet in the Dstv Premiership this season.
