Liberia Vs Nigeria player ratings: Osimhen energetic, Balogun and Ekong shaky as Nigeria seal 2-0 victory over Liberia

The Super Eagles of Nigeria earned a 2-0 victory over the Lone Stars of Liberia at the Grande de Tanger stadium in Morocco.

Gernot Rohr set up an attacking-minded lineup featuring Osimhen, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Alex Iwobi.

However, the Super Eagles needed two penalties from Osimhen and Musa to put themselves one point away from a playoff round spot.

Here is Soccernet’s player rating of the game

Maduka Okoye (7) The shot-stopper showed awareness to get off his line and parry some dangerous balls from Liberia. Had a quiet second half.

Chidozie Awaziem (9) One of the best players for Nigeria. Had a hand in the long ball that led to the penalty. Defensively solid.

Leon Balogun: (6) Made a couple of errors in the game. Looked nervous in aerial situations.

William Stroot-Ekong (6) Ekong also made a few lapses but was generally decent.

Jamilu Collins (6) Had a goal wrongly ruled out for offside. Otherwise, he was defensively solid.

Simon Moses (6.5) Deployed in a defensive role in a back five. He put on a decent showing.

Wilfred Ndidi (7) The Leicester city man was tidy on the ball and also defensively good.

Joe Aribo (7.5) His work rate and strength on the ball was impressive. Faded deep into the game.

Alex Iwobi (5) Iwobi had a night to forget. Subbed shortly after the hour mark.

Kelechi Iheanacho (8) Kelechi Iheanacho had a decent game. He won the penalty for the first goal and linked up well with Osimhen.

Victor Osimhen (9) The Napoli star was excellent. Won almost every aerial duel. Scored the opener from the spot and caused the penalty for the second goal.

Sub

Chidera Ejuke (6) Brought more energy to the team after replacing Iwobi. However, he was reckless on the ball.

Ahmed Musa (6)  He was a late substitute. Scored a late penalty to seal the win.

  • Don’t let be fooled, the Super Eagles technical adviser is not good enough for our national team.If we’re struggling to beat Liberia, what chance do we’ve against top African teams not to talk of the best teams in the world. The Super Eagles have no playing pattern after Gernot Rohr has been in charge for five years. You can’t give what you don’t have.Let us get a decent coach.

  • I wonder if I watched the same game . But hey each are entitled to their own opinion. As for Rohr many hate him for their lack of knowledge of the game . The past greats don’t exist . But nevertheless the boys are doing well. Gone are the days when you just turn up and give someone 6-0 . Football is improving all over the globe . Liberia are no push overs despite the FIFA ratings , which personally I think are rubbish . The boys will make the knock out stage and then we wait and see . Support the boys and stop crying them and the coach down

    • "Gone are the days when you just turn up and give someone 6-0..."

Excuse me Mr., that's exactly what Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia and Senegal, our fellow WA, did in almost all their matches in these qualifiers.

These teams fills their fans with confidence with their top performances every month during these qualification matches.

Anyone who fails to see that the best days of Gernot Rohr as a football coach are behind him is either ignorant or living in denial.

In the beginning, player invitations was based purely on club form and merit...now he has ceded the task of players'invitation to the corrupt NFF because he's a coach who lacks mettle.

You people should continue to support the mediocre coach whose employment contract is intact, no thanks to corrupt practices at the Glass House. The consequences will overflow very soon.

  • I think Nigeria should have a good technical director. We just manage to win 2-0 on penalty.

  • Well, I don't know what what happened to chukwueze, I felt he would have free Osihme upfront. His skills were missing and Osihme was choked by the defenders. Job Weil done.

  • Rohr has ran out of coach tatics. selecting good footballers and fielding them together to play and collecting mega salary is something anyone can do...
i don't know what Yobo is even doing there.
