‘Rohr should just resign’- Super Eagles fans react to the team’s disastrous performance against CAR

The three-time African champions suffered a shock home defeat in their World Cup qualifier against Les Fauves, and the fans have made their feelings known following the game

Nigeria’s coach Gernot Rohr is bearing most of the brunt from fans, but the players are also not spared following their disastrous performance in the 2022 World Cup qualifier against the Central African Republic.

The Super Eagles were the clear favourites going into the first leg of their doubleheader clash against Les Fauves at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.

The odds favoured Nigeria as not only they were 90 places above their rivals in the FIFA rankings, they had also not lost a World Cup qualifier at home in 40 years.

However, the unthinkable happened in Lagos as Karl Namnganda capitalised on a defensive error from Leon Balogun and William Troost-Ekong to score the only goal of the game and claim a famous win for the Wild Beasts.

It was a well-deserved win for CAR, but an embarrassing display from the Super Eagles and fans showed their anger after the game, with Rohr bearing most of the brunt on social media.

Some called for the German tactician’s resignation, while others hit out at the team’s display.

“#Rohr should just resign”, a user said.

Another user said: “Gernot Rohr is the worse coach in Nigeria’s footballing history.”

A user chose to direct his anger at the players: “This Nigeria players is the definition of Nigeria problem.”

A user compared the Super Eagles with the current government in the country.

Another one said: “What was Leon Balogun trying to do? This isn’t a team, this is a collection of individuals. Tactless, uninspiring, filled with bang on average players.”

Again, another user can’t wait to see Rohr go: “Can we start #ROHROUT Now? How on earth will a team like Nigeria be without a single attacking midfielder.”

A user said: “Watching Nigerian @NGSuperEagles under #Rohr is a big challenge.”

No love for Rohr from this user: “Rohr has never impressed me ever since he got this #Supereagles job.”

Another user wants Rohr gone: “Sack this rubbish coach if that is what it takes to get to the world cup in Qatar.”

Nonetheless, despite the flak Rohr and his boys are getting, they have an immediate chance to redeem themselves when they take on the same team in the second leg in Douala on Sunday.

  • Rohr is not the kind of coach for super eagle, if you have be following the team you will agree with me that all the matches won since the the time of Rohr is as a result of individual effort, he lacks the tactical skill for modern footbal. What we have under Rohr is individual players not a team. Until they bring a good coach we will never have a team that can adjust and make positive impact in a difficult match like this.

  • u never see anything yet as long as rohr remain the head coach of this team,if anybody is disputing let wait after nation cup,no any good coach will stay in a team this long period of time and still doesn't ve good team is unfortunate

  • In a normal setting, Amaju Pinnick, the whole association, and the coaching crew would have long gone before now!
They all have been bringing International shame on us, I still remember the South Africa defeat of the Super Eagles herein Nigeria for the 1st time in history!...and so many more like yesterday's defeat!
    #AMAJUPINNICK CORRUPTIONGO NOW!

  • The coach is highly incompetent, someone will say, but we have always qualifying for tournaments that's because of the individual talents we have on the team. No game plan, he doesn't know how to make good calls and change tactics in the course of a game. The game yesterday I observed when the game started they played back pass back pass and a long ball. No midfield play nothing. The C.A.R. had a game plan. Mass defense and counter, they tried a few times yet Rohr didn't do anything about it. NFF is it not time to sack this man? Because we don't enjoy good football from our team anymore.

  • Leon Balogun is an experienced defender. But just don’t understand what he was trying to do in a dangerous area. He should have used his body and chest to shield the ball away from the CAR striker or kick the ball away. Leave his head!!! He is been defending for a while. He should know better. Anyway, that’s football for you. Sometimes you win or loose. It’s unpredictable

  • The game wasn’t lost on the pitch. It was lost before it started. Players arriving late to camp, unpaid salaries and most importantly bad tactics. Nigeria has shown that it can’t cope with teams that play high up the pitch with pressure. Look at the South Africa, Cape Verde and Central African Republic defeats.
