The Iron Ones strode to a comfortable home win over the Bundesliga high-flyers, thanks in no small part to the opener from their Nigerian star
Taiwo Awoniyi netted his sixth Bundesliga goal of the season to help Union Berlin triumph 2-0 over Wolfsburg at the Alte Foersterei on Saturday afternoon.
After a goalless first half which saw both sides sized each other up for the most part, Awoniyi found space in the opponents’ danger area to smash a fine Genki Haraguchi pass into the net four minutes into the second period.
Sheraldo Becker headed home the second goal seven minutes before time as Urs Fischer’s men claimed all three points that helped them overtake their opponents on the Bundesliga table.
Awoniyi would be especially pleased with his left-footed strike, his ninth in all competitions for Union Berlin.
Aside from his six goals in the domestic scene, the 24-year-old has two goals in the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifiers and another in the competition’s group stage.
Overall, Awoniyi has 12 goals in the Bundesliga, the sixth-best of Nigerian stars in the German top-flight.
Only Jonathan Akpoborie (60 goals), Victor Agali (32), Anthony Ujah (30), Jay-Jay Okocha (18), and Chinedu Obasi (17) have scored more than Awoniyi in the German league since its inception in 1963.
