The Nigerian forward hit a memorable landmark for the Black Sea Storm in their titanic clash against the 2019 Super Lig champions on Sunday
Anthony Nwakaeme continued his impressive start to the season by scoring the equaliser as Trabzonspor came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at home to Galatasaray at the Medical Park Stadium.
The 32-year-old attacker’s strike, which earned a share of the points at stake, was his fourth goal in as many league matches for Abdullah Avci’s men.
And with that effort, Nwakaeme entered Trabzonspor’s record books, becoming the first Black Sea Storm player since Necmi Perekli in 1976/77 to score in each of the club’s first four league games of the season.
Prior to Sunday’s titanic clash against Galatasaray, Nwakaeme was among the goal scorers in the 5-1 humbling of Yeni Malatyaspor and the 2-1 defeat of Sivasspor. The former Hapoel Beer Sheva ace also grabbed the only goal in the 1-0 win at Giresunspor.
But Fatih Terim’s men proved to be a class above those other foes, racing to a two-goal lead before Andreas Cornelius and Nwakaeme pulled Trabzonspor back on levelled terms.
And the Nigerian star has admitted that Galatasaray were a formidable foe, even if they were helped a bit by the fatigue brought upon Tranzonspor’s players by the international break.
“It was a good match,” Nwakaeme said after the match, as per Hurriyet.
“We knew it wouldn’t be easy. National post-mid matches are tough. Those who go to the national team get tired of games and travels. Those who do not go do not continue at the same pace.
“We didn’t play an easy opponent either. We played with a team like Galatasaray. We left the field with 1 point. We need to focus on the next game.”
Trabzonspor’s next game is an away trip to the Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Stadyumu to face Kasimpasa in a matchday five fixture on September 18.
The Black Sea Storm have been knocked out of the inaugural edition of the Europa Conference League after losing on aggregate to Italian giants AS Roma.
