Nigeria’s most successful club appoints Super Eagles legend George Finidi as head coach

The former flying winger will begin his coaching career in the domestic league with one of the continent’s biggest clubs

According to reports in the media, two-time CAF Champions League winner Enyimba FC have appointed ex-Nigerian international George Finidi as the team’s Technical Adviser.

Finidi will replace coach Fatai Osho who led the Aba Elephants to a second-place finish in the recently concluded 2020-21 season of the Nigeria Professional Football League.

Enyimba, having won more Champions League titles and more NPFL honours than every other Nigerian team, will look to count on the expertise of a man who was among the first Nigerian players to achieve success in Europe.

Finidi was a key member of the Ajax team that won three Eredivisie titles, the 1995 UEFA Champions League, the European Super Cup, and the Intercontinental Cup.

He was capped 62 times by Nigeria from 1991 to 2002, winning the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia with the Super Eagles.

The 50-year-old retired from active football in 2004 and has since pursued his dreams of being a coach by acquiring a UEFA B license.

Finidi had severally been linked with the Golden Eaglets coaching role, having previously worked with the youth team of his former club Real Mallorca in Spain.

But it is with Enyimba that the former Real Betis dazzling winger will take the next step in his chosen career.

  • Finidi George is one of the best winger Nigeria has ever produced during his days in the Super Eagles. I love his style of playing. He is very fast and calculative in crossing the ball to the central attacker. He synced very well with the late Rashidi Yekini. I pray he will do well with Eyinba FC.

  • As a ball boy at Calabar Rovers, I watched Finidi at close range then. His trade mark runs on the flanks and pin point crosses were second to none. Very good for Nigerian league!

  • This is good for our league, Finidi George was my mentor as a footballer when I was much more younger.
His experience will also help our league develop and competitive.
    Nice one my Man......

  • He should be very selective in the away games he attends, especially if there is no direct flight. And even then some airports are right inside the den of bandits. He is too big to be going about in Nigeria right now. He can however attend all away games outside Nigeria.

  • Finidi still the best winger in Nigeria,s football history. He is calm, humble and always exhibit the spirit of sportsmanship. I wish him all the best in his coaching career and i know he will do pretty well at Enyimba. Remain blessed my man.

  • Finidi George will be frustrated with Nigeria league structure and organization.
But l pray he do well. Because it takes politics and hard work to succeed in Nigeria league

  • Nice one for the league, adequate security should be provided for him to encourage other ex internationals intending to venture into our league

  • It is a welcome development for our league and sport development. Finidi is in the class and players like Guadiola and i believe he can succeed here with his experience and education.
