Euro Wrap: Iwobi, Dennis crash out of the EFL; Okonkwo, Arokodare score again

Soccernet.ng brings you the highlights of how several Super Eagles and Nigeria-born stars performed in Europe on Tuesday.

Emmanuel Dennis was a second-half substitute, and William Troost-Ekong was an unused sub as Watford crashed out of the League Cup after a 3-1 loss at the Vicarage Road to Stoke City.

Dennis was thrown into the fray immediately after Sam Clucas handed the Championship side a 2-1 lead in the 80th minute, but the former Club Brugge man could not save the Hornets, who suffered a killer third five minutes later.

At the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium, London, Alex Iwobi saw every minute of action as Everton were sent out of the EFL Cup after losing 8-7 on penalties to Queen Park Rangers.

Rafael Benitez’s men had to come from behind twice against the lower league side to draw 2-2, but the Toffees could not complete the comeback during the spot-kicks.

Frank Onyeka returned to Brentford’s starting eleven, and the Super Eagles star helped the Bees hand a 7-0 thrashing to Oldham Athletic at the Brentford Community Stadium.

The Nigerian midfielder was withdrawn in the 71st minute, and at that time, the home side had a six-goal advantage.

In the Italian Serie B, Orji Okonkwo continued his fine scoring form for Cittadella as he netted the consolation goal in his side’s 4-1 humbling at Benevento.

The on-loan Bologna forward scored the winner in the 1-0 defeat of Pordenone at the weekend.

The 23-year-old drew Cittadella back on levelled terms at the Stadio Ciro Vigorito in the 13th minute after Acampora had given Benevento a 5th-minute lead.

But a poor defensive showing in the second half saw the home side smashed in three goals in 17 minutes to secure a comprehensive victory.

For the second Ligue 2 game in a row, Tolu Arokodare came from the bench to rescue a point for Amiens as Philippe Hinschberger’s men were forced to a 2-2 draw by Pau at the Stade Crédit Agricole de la Licorne in Amiens.

Arokodare was introduced in place of Badji in the 66th minute with the tie locked at one-all, and the 20-year-old made it 2-1 ten minutes later. But Djibril Dianessy struck a stoppage-time equaliser for the visitors as Amiens search for their first win since mid-August continued.

20-year-old Arokodare had scored his second goal of the season at the weekend, a 95th-minute equaliser that helped Amiens claim a thrilling 3-3 draw away to Nimes.
