Calvin Bassey: Meet the new Super Eagles player inspired by Real Madrid and Bayern Munich stars

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr is known to stick to his trusted legs, even in tight situations, but one man has caught the eyes of the Franco-German

The list of players called up for the crucial World Cup qualifier doubleheader against the Central African Republic has been released, and Rangers fullback Calvin Bassey got his first Super call up.

But who is the 21-year-old star?

Bassey was born in Italy to a Nigerian father, but he grew up in England. As such, he is eligible to play for Italy, England and Nigeria.

Eventually, he chose to represent the three-time African champions. The 21-year-old is having his break out season at the Ibrox under coach Steven Gerrard.

Due to the Gers’ injury issues, he has had to play the left-back position, and he has put up a good shift, helping the Gers to victory in all the games he has featured in.

Bassey started his career at Leicester City, where he rose from the academy to the youth team before joining Rangers in the summer of 2020.

The Aosta-born left-back struggled in his first season as he only featured in seven Scottish Premiership games, but he has featured in seven games in all competitions this campaign.

Whilst he is good defensively, Bassey could also be a big threat up front as he is a good crosser of the ball. The former Leicester City man has two assists to his name this season.

The 21-year-old’s positive style of play is not far-fetched as he is a big fan of Real Madrid star Marcelo and Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies, who are known for their ability upfront.

“Back then was Marcelo. I loved the way he got forward. He was quality on the ball,” Bassey told Rangers TV.

“He’d do a little trick and get a cross in and get an assist or do a little trick, and next thing you know, he’s had a shot, and it’s a goal, so Marcelo is definitely one of my heroes growing up.

“Right now, Alphonso Davies is a great player. He’s lightning-quick, and his ability to get up and down is amazing.

“I feel you should always be open to learn no matter the level you’re watching or the level you’re playing. I always try to watch as much football as I can and learn from players who are playing in my position, he added.”

Bassey’s ability could be a major tool in Rohr’s hands as the likes of Onuachu and Osimhen could benefit from his crosses.

The two games against the Central African Republic is less than two weeks away, and the Aosta-born defender will hope that he gets his time under the sun.
