Onuachu laments despite Champions League goal

The Nigerian international finally got off the mark for the Belgian side on Tuesday, but he still ended on the losing side

Super Eagles forward Paul Onuachu has lamented the mistakes that cost KRC Genk a positive result against Shakhtar Donetsk in their Champions League clash on Tuesday evening.

Onuachu scored 35 goals in all competitions for Genk last season but went through pre-season without finding the back of the net.

The former FC Midtjylland star finally shook the monkey off his back against the Ukrainian giants when he headed home a Junya Ito cross in the 39th minute of their UCL qualifier.

That strike was, however, not enough as Shakhtar scored twice in the second half to seize control of the tie ahead of the return leg in Kyiv next week.

Onuachu believes Genk performed well but blames individual mistakes and the referee’s biased calls for the Belgians’ defeat.

“It was a difficult game. We followed the plan well,” Onuachu said after the match, as per Walfoot.

“It’s a good team, but we played well. Only we made the mistakes ourselves. We have to be careful of that. However, it is also true that the referee whistled everything for them.

“Then it’s hard to come back. We had chances to win, but the last pass was often not good enough. Still, I’m happy with our performance.

“That I scored? It wasn’t good enough. The result is of importance to me. We had to get a result, but we lost.” the Super Eagles striker said.
