The forward has only played three games under his new manager this season, but his performance on the pitch have earned him a place in Benitez’s heart.
Everton gaffer Rafael Benitez has heaped praise on Alex Iwobi after the Nigerian midfielder put up an outstanding performance to help Everton advance to the third round of the EFL Cup following a 2-1 win against Huddersfield.
Iwobi scored the opener in the 14th minute, and even after Everton were reduced to ten men, he still put up a good show in midfield to help Everton beat the Championship side.
Speaking after the match, Benitez praised Iwobi’s for putting in a brilliant shift despite picking up an injury in the encounter.
“I like to see Tom Davies work so hard with a little problem in his quadriceps, I like to see Alex Iwobi limping but still trying to help the team, and I like the second goal and the way we finished,” Benitez said on Everton’s website.
Under the tutelage of his new Spanish boss this season, Iwobi’s gameplay has improved, and it is not a surprise as Benitez is known for his ability to work his way into his players’ heads and make them play better.
Everton will know their third-round opponents in the draws that will hold today. Meanwhile, their next fixture in the Premier League is at the Amex Stadium against Brighton.
