Southampton could use Nigeria-eligible star in swap deal to land another Striker

The Saints wants to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new Premier League, but they don’t have the required funds to pay for their number one target

Premier League side Southampton are interested in signing Adam Armstrong but cannot afford the 25m pounds Blackburn Rovers want for his services.

However, according to reports from the Sun, the Saints could use Nigeria-eligible striker Micheal Obafemi in a swap deal to land their man.

The young saints’ forward hasn’t been one of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s regular men during his stay at the St. Mary’s. He hasn’t had his time to shine due to the presence of Danny Ings and Che Adams, and he is now seen as a surplus to requirements.

Southampton, who had their first bid of £8m for Armstrong rejected, are looking to entice Blackburn with the addition of Obafemi.

The 21-year-old has struggled with life at the Saints’ since his debut in January 2018; he was injured for massive spells last season, which saw him register only five appearances.

Blackburn coach Tony Mowbray seems to be a fan of the Nigeria-eligible striker as he sees him as a suitable replacement if Armstrong leaves Blackburn.

The diminutive Leyton-orient Academy product will look to heal his ailing career at Rovers if the deal goes through.

Obafemi has represented Ireland at the youth level and once for the Senior team. However, he can still play for the Super Eagles if he decides to switch allegiances.
