Kenneth Omeruo wants out of Leganes

The Cucumber Growers have a big task in their hands to keep the Nigerian international in the lower tier beyond this summer

Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo has informed his Spanish employers, Leganes, that he desires to leave the club this summer as he doesn’t want to spend another year in the Segunda Division.

Omeruo moved permanently to Leganes from Chelsea in 2019 after impressing on a year-long loan spell.

But his second year with the Cucumber Growers ended in disappointment as the landlords of the Estadio Municipal de Butarque suffered relegation from the Spanish La Liga.

Despite the risk of losing his place in the national team, Omeruo stayed with Leganes in the lower league and helped Asier Garitano’s men finish third of 22 teams in the Segunda Division.

But Leganes could not secure promotion to the Primera Division as a failed campaign in the playoffs mean the club will spend the 2021/22 season in the Segunda Division.

But with the African Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup coming up next year, another season in the Spanish second-tier could hamper Omeruo’s first-team chances with the Super Eagles.

Omeruo is one of the oldest members of the Nigerian national team and was part of the Super Eagles squad that lifted the Afcon title in 2013.

And, according to AS, the former Chelsea defender as communicated to the club’s management his desire to depart Leganes for a team in La Liga.

Leganes will not stop the 27-year-old from taking the exit door but will demand that any interested suitor pay €3m.

Leganes parted with €5 million two years ago to convince Chelsea to let Omeruo switch London for the outskirts of Madrid.
