Bundesliga side Union Berlin make Taiwo Awoniyi the club’s most expensive ever signing

German Bundesliga club Union Berlin have completed the signing of former Nigeria U20 international Taiwo Awoniyi from Liverpool on a permanent deal believed to be worth £6.5million (€7.5m/$9m).

If the reports are accurate, it makes Awoniyi the most expensive acquisition in the history of Union Berlin, costing £3.35million more than Poland’s international left-back, Tymoteusz Puchacz.

Announcing the deal on their official website and social media platforms, Union Berlin confirm that the former Mainz star will be wearing the number 14 jersey he wore while on loan at the club last season.

After spending six years as a Liverpool player, the 2013 FIFA u-17 World Cup leave without playing a single competitive match for the Anfield giants.

Awoniyi is pleased, though, that he has finally found a place he can call home.

“I am happy to finally arrive after the many loan spells in recent years and have a home,” the Nigerian striker said after signing the contract papers.

“I owe so much to Union, and the fact that I have now been given a firm commitment makes me happy and proud. It’s fantastic that I can continue to go down the great path with the club. I’ll give everything to pick up where I was before my injury.”

Since joining Liverpool in 2015, Awoniyi has been shipped on loan to FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen, Royal Excel Mouscron, KAA Gent and Mainz, before teaming up with Union Berlin last summer.
