The former Super Eagles skipper recently moved to Asia to team up with Kuwaiti’s Sports Club, and one of his compatriots could be following suit in the coming days
Nigerian international Mikel Agu is reportedly on the verge of leaving Portuguese side Vitoria de Guimaraes two years after joining the club from FC Porto.
Agu has been out of action for several weeks since picking up an injury in Guimaraes’ 1-0 loss to Porto in April.
The 28-year-old defensive midfielder has missed each of his side’s three preseason games in July as part of preparations ahead of the new football season, including last weekend’s 2-1 victory over Mafra.
However, as per Portuguese publication Ojogo, it has become clearer that Agu is no longer under the observation of the Vitoria Guimaraes’ medical department and is closer to the Estádio Afonso Henriques’ exit door.
The former Club Brugge midfielder has reportedly received a tempting offer from an Arab club, and Guimaraes have kicked off negotiations with the yet-to-be-identified suitor.
A move to Asia will bring an end to Agu’s decade-long stay in Europe. The seven-cap Super Eagles star arrived in Portugal as a teenager in 2011 to join Porto’s youth academy.
He has since played for Porto’s first team, spent time on loan at Club Brugge, Vitoria Setubal (twice), and Bursaspor before landing at Guimaraes on a free transfer in 2019.
Agu won’t be the only Nigerian footballer in recent times tempted to quit Europe for the riches in Asia.
A few days ago, former Chelsea star Mikel Obi terminated his contract with Stoke to put pen to paper on a lucrative contract with Kuwaiti SC.
