The 2020/2021 Dutch top-flight season came to an end on Sunday afternoon and one Nigerian international featured in the team of the year
Super Eagles number one goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has been included in the Eredivisie team of the just-concluded season.
It’s an impressive achievement for Okoye, given this is his first season in the Netherlands and playing top-flight football.
Okoye joined Sparta Rotterdam from Fortuna Dusseldorf II but found himself on the bench in the early stages of the season.
However, he was able to earn the trust of manager Henk Fraser, who made him the team’s undisputed number one.
Okoye made 28 league appearance for Sparta, helping the team to a Europa League playoff place. The 21-year-old averaged 2.6 saves per game, keeping ten clean sheets in the process.
Okoye’s performances have now been rewarded as he was selected ahead of other established goalkeepers in the league.
The German-born goalkeeper has already been linked with a move away from Sparta following reported interest from Ajax.
