“Stay another year” – Sparta fans show appreciation, love towards Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye

A fantastic season ended on a bit of a disappointing note for the young shot-stopper in midweek, but club supporters have appreciated his performances over a challenging campaign

Many Sparta Rotterdam fans have applauded Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye for his excellent displays all season long that helped the club finish eighth on the Eredivisie table.

Okoye signed for De Kasteelheren in the summer after departing boyhood club Fortuna Dusseldorf and shortly became the number one gloves for the Dutch side.

And despite starting the campaign on a terrible note, Sparta rallied to end impressively, with Okoye contributing his quota by keeping ten clean sheets.

Henk Fraser’s men qualified for the Eredivisie’s Europa League playoffs, giving the club the chance to make it to the continent for the first time in over three decades.

But a 2-0 defeat to Feyenoord at the Stadion Feijenoord on Wednesday aborted that dream and brought a disappointing end to an otherwise good season.

Still, Okoye took to his social media site to express his feelings about Sparta and the concluded season.

“A great season came to an end last night. Happy to be part of this Club!! I thank God almighty for all he done for me,” wrote the 20-year-old.

And his post attracted quite a few comments.

While a Borussia Dortmund lover called on the German side to move for Okoye, some Spartan supporters urged the Super Eagles goalie not to leave the club just yet.

Okoye was named in the Eredivisie team of the season as the best goalkeeper in the Netherlands top-flight in only his maiden season in the country.
