Reports: Senegal out, Cameroon in as Super Eagles get set for June friendlies

The Nigerian national football team will be involved in a couple of friendly matches next month, with the identities of their opponents becoming clearer

The Super Eagles will trade tackles with the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in June, even as the Senegal national team has reportedly opted out of a friendly with Nigeria.

With the Confederation of African Football (CAF) postponing the World Cup qualifiers until later in the year, top officials of the Nigerian Football Federation have been shopping for opponents to engage the Super Eagles and help keep the three-time African champions in top shape for the challenges ahead.

President of the NFF, Amaju Pinnick, earlier confirmed that the Super Eagles are scheduled for two friendly matches during the June international break.

As per the NationSport, Senegal’s Teranga Lions have declined the opportunity to pit their wits against the 2013 Afcon champions, despite confirming holding talks with Nigeria football officials in that regard.

But Cameroon, African champions in 2015, have agreed to test their might against the Gernot Rohr-tutored side as both teams aim to prepare in the best possible shape for the World Cup qualifiers.

The match, says the Sun, will be played in Austria on June 4.

The last time the West African neighbours met was at the quarterfinals of the 2019 Afcon, where the super Eagles edged a nail-biting five-goal thriller.

Nigeria have won 12 of their 23 meetings with Cameroon, losing just four.
