Relegation looms for Semi Ajayi as West Brom fail to soar past Wolves

Barely a year after celebrating promotion to the elite league with the Baggies, the Nigerian international is on the verge of suffering relegation heartache

Semi Ajayi featured from start to finish at the Hawthorns as West Brom came from behind to draw 1-1 with Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League’s latest Black Country Derby.

West Brom’s return to the Championship is all but confirmed after the draw against the visitors left the Baggies with just five wins all season.

Sam Allardyce had guided West Brom to just one loss in their last six fixtures at home, but the league’s most flawed defence could still not keep out a Wolves side that had managed to score just two goals in their last three matches.

Young Portuguese forward Fabio Silva found the back of the net with a delicate lob on the stroke of halftime to give the visitors the lead.

But Mbaye Diagne headed home the hosts’ equaliser from a fine Conor Townsend cross to level proceedings with half an hour still to play.

Still, the two limited teams could not fashion the winning goal before the referee whistle signalled the end of the encounter.

Ajayi made 43 appearances, scoring five goals to power the Baggies to the Premier League from the Championship last term.

But despite his two-goal and 29-match contribution this season, West Brom remain stuck in 19th place, a massive ten points from safety with just twelve points left to fight for.
