Bundesliga: Taiwo Awoniyi helps Union Berlin finish on a high

The Liverpool loanee has spent most parts of 2021 on the sidelines, but he played his 21st and final game of this season on Saturday afternoon

Taiwo Awoniyi came off the bench to help Union Berlin to a 2-1 win over RB Leipzig on the last day of the 2020/2021 Bundesliga season.

The 23-year-old has been unlucky with injuries this year, but he made his 21st league and probably his final appearance for the capital side.

Awoniyi is on loan at Union from Liverpool, but the Nigerian is set to return to Anfield after finally receiving a work permit to play in England.

However, he was able to end his stay with the Iron Ones on a high as they came back from a goal down to beat Leipzig.

Both sides could not find a breakthrough in the first half, but Leipzig took the lead in the 55th minute. However, Awoniyi’s introduction in the 58th minute injected life into Union’s attack.

The home side levelled scores in the 67th minute through Marvin Friedrich before Max Kruse struck in the second minute of added time to seal a dramatic win for Union.
