“Germany Is My Home” – Nigerian Defender Leon Balogun

The Nigerian international began his football career in Germany, and despite going abroad to fulfil his dreams, the defender is not ruling out the possibility of ending it all in the land of his birth

Born in Berlin, Balogun cut his footballing teeth at Hannover before going on to feature for Werder Bremen, Düsseldorf, and Mainz, making a combined 75 Bundesliga appearances.

After leaving Germany, the Nigerian international joined the English Premier League side Brighton & Hove and spent time at Wigan Athletic before moving to Rangers on a free transfer last year.

Balogun then played an integral role as Rangers, under the tutelage of Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard, won the Scottish Premiership for the first time in ten years.

The former Mainz star has an option of an additional year in his Rangers contract, and he says he is keen to remain with the Gers.

When asked by Bild if he would be staying at Rangers for next season, Balogun said: “I definitely want to stay.”

And when asked if he would later consider a German top-flight club later in his career, the Super Eagles man responded: “Clear! Germany is my Home.
