The 23-year-old limped off in Bordeaux’s win at Dijon and has now been replaced in the Super Eagles squad for the two Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers later this month
Henry Onyekuru has been called up to replace Samuel Kalu ahead of Nigeria’s Afcon qualifiers against the Benin Republic and Lesotho.
Kalu was initially in the 24-man squad announced by Gernot Rohr last week, but the 23-year-old has now been ruled out due to a hamstring injury. The former Gent winger walked off 16 minutes into Bordeaux’s 3-1 win over Dijon on Sunday afternoon.
The winger has is not expected to recover on time for Nigeria’s games this month, which has opened the door for Onyekuru.
Onyekuru is one of the players on standby, but he has now been called up following his impressive performance in his third spell at Galatasaray.
The former Anderlecht striker has scored five goals and registered two assists since joining the Lions from Monaco in January.
Onyekuru has scored one goal in 11 appearances for Nigeria, but he has not been called up since the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
