German Youth International ‘Proud Of Nigerian Roots’

A string of exceptional displays over the past few months has thrown youngster Felix Agu into the spotlight, and the German sensation is not scared to share his connection with the most populous country in Africa

German youth international defender Felix Agu has confessed he is proud of his Nigerian heritage and has stated that he dreams of visiting the West African nation as soon as possible.

Born to a Nigerian father in Osnabruck, Germany, Agu spent his formative years with his grandparents and relatives in the African country before returning to Europe to further his academics and football.

But the beautiful game took centre-stage in his life after he excelled at hometown club Osnabruck – where he spent eight years with the youth setup – before Werder Bremen snapped him up last year on a four-year contract.

Agu has since featured in nine Bundesliga matches for Werder Bremen, with his excellent match-winning performance against Augsburg In January, the highlight of his season.

With the match against Heiko Herrlich’s men heading for a stalemate, Agu did well to assist Theodor Gebre Selassie’s 84th-minute opener before the 21-year-old fullback scored his first Bundesliga goal three minutes later to seal a fine 2-0 win.

Despite his burgeoning profile and two caps for the German U21 team, Agu is not disconnected from his real roots.

“Nigeria is not doing so well, unfortunately, but I like this part of my heritage. I think it’s nice to have roots somewhere other than Germany,” Agu told the club’s official website.

“I would really like to go to Nigeria again someday. I do remember the christening, but everything else I only know from photographs.

“Unfortunately, I haven’t found the right opportunity yet, but it would be nice to go there with the whole family again.”

Agu will get the chance to add to his nine German top-flight appearances when Werder Bremen make the trip to Cologne on Sunday.
