Title Record Holders Enyimba Edge Adamawa In Bauchi Thriller

The eight-time Nigeria Premier League winners have never lost against Adamawa United and they maintained their unbeaten run with another victory on Monday

Two first-half goals from Anayo Iwuala and Imo Obot powered Enyimba International to an exciting 2-1 win over Adamawa United in their matchday six clash in Bauchi.

There were countless chances created from kickoff to the final whistle, but the Aba Elephants proved to be the more clinical of the two sides to record their fourth victory of the campaign.

Enyimba have never lost a league meeting with United, winning two out of two previous matches without conceding a goal.

And they were up and running in the opening stages, asking questions from the home side’s defence before Iwuala fired past goalkeeper Philemon following a defensive mix-up in the eighth minute.

Adamawa United were stung by that opener, but it was the visitors who continued to dominate and deservedly extended their lead in the 32nd minute.

Enyimba carved open their opponents with ease, and Dayo Ojo sent a low cross into the box, which was duly tapped home by left-back Obot.

Chances continued to open for the Aba Elephants. It could have been three-nil when Obot used his pace to glide past his opponent and centred a cross into the box for Omoyele, but Philemon foiled the opportunity.

Adamawa’s biggest chance of the half finally arrived moments before the break.

Adam Yakubu was played through on goal with only goalkeeper Noble to beat. But the Enyimba shot-stopper made himself big to narrow the space and blocked the Adamawa striker’s attempt for a corner kick.

On the hour-mark, Adamawa United finally scored their first-ever league goal against Enyimba FC as Idris Abubakar scored from the spot to drag his side back in the game.

But the 2019 NPFL champions wanted more, and only the woodwork came to United’s rescue in the 83rd minute when substitute Olisema danced into the opponents’ danger area and fired at goal.

Seconds later, Enyimba squandered another chance to extend their advantage as Olisema threaded Iwuala through on goal, only for the winger to miss his target after rounding the goalkeeper.

But the People’s Elephant had done enough to earn all three points that catapult them to third on the league table.
