The Nigerian forward has been enjoying a good run of goalscoring form, and he was at it again versus the title hopefuls
Union Berlin struck a massive blow at Borussia Dortmund’s title hopes, inflicting a 2-1 defeat on the visitors with one of the goals coming from their in-form Nigerian star Taiwo Awoniyi.
The on-loan Liverpool striker found the back of the net for Union Berlin shortly after the halftime break to open the scoring for the hosts in their Bundesliga clash against Borussia Dortmund on Friday evening.
The 2015 Africa U23 Nations Cup winner arrived at the back post to expertly finish off a Prömel knock-on from a corner kick in the 58th minute of the encounter.
Awoniyi has now scored a goal in four of his last six appearances for Union Berlin in the Bundesliga.
The home side’s lead, however, lasted only three minutes as the UEFA Champions League youngest ever player, Youssoufa Mukoko equalized for Dortmund on the hour-mark.
But Marvin Friedrich restored Union Berlin’s lead in the 78th minute, and the hosts defended that lead to ensure Edin Terzic’s men left the Stadion An der Alten Försterei in Berlin empty-handed.
The defeat leaves Dortmund rooted to the fourth position on the league table with six points now separating them from leaders Bayer Leverkusen and five from second-placed Bayern Munich, two teams that have a game each at hand.
Union Berlin, though, climb to fifth on the table, a point behind Dortmund, reigniting their dreams of securing European football next term.
