“His Positional Play Is Excellent” – Paul Onuachu Hailed For Incredible Goalscoring Run

The former Midtjylland striker is the reason Genk are joint-top of the Belgium First Division A, having scored more than a third of the club’s goals so far this term

Club Brugge hero Gert Verheyen has reserved special applause for Super Eagles star Paul Onuachu, highlighting that the Racing Genk number 9 has no equal in the Belgian First Division A.

Onuachu has been the most prolific forward in the Belgian top-flight this term with the 26-year-old star’s brace in the brilliant 5-1 win at Cercle Brugge this past weekend, taking his season tally to 12 goals.

With that haul, Onuachu has two goals more than Beerschot Raphael Holzhauser and three more than Genk teammate Theo Bongonda.

Nigeria-eligible and English-born forward Ike Ugbo, enjoying a fantastic loan spell at Cercle Brugge from Premier League side Chelsea, has seven goals.

Onuachu has been consistent in front of goal for Genk, netting 12 of the club’s 31 goals and helping John van den Brom’s side claim six consecutive victories.

This impressive run has drawn a complimentary appraisal from Verheyen, who said of Onuachu in his column on Het Nieuwsblad:

“Just take a look at how many of our big clubs are out of luck with their number 9. The exception is Racing Genk. Mbokani also scores, but is still in a dip.

“What Onuachu does very well is always aim. His positional play is excellent. His decisions whether or not to come for the man are very often the right one. That’s something you can’t learn.”

He added: “Like that first goal against Cercle Brugge, that deviation on Ito’s low cross. There he didn’t make the logical choice but opted for the far corner—something Didillon did not expect.

“Onuachu pays off as centre forward in a 3-4 -3, flanked by Ito and Bongonda. It is that trio that helped Genk achieve results”.

Genk, four times winner of the Belgian First Division, last lifted the league title in 2019 and will hope that Onuachu’s goals can help wrestle the championship trophy from reigning champions, Club Brugge.
