Fernandes Outshines Iwobi As United Bounce Back At Everton

Super Eagles star Alex Iwobi tried his best after his introduction, but Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes was the star of the show at Goodison Park, inspiring Manchester United to a 3-1 comeback victory at Everton on Saturday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men came into the encounter on the back of consecutive defeats to Arsenal in the Premier League and Istanbul Basaksehir in the Europa League.

However, two first-half goals from Fernandes and a late Edison strike powered the Red Devils to their seventh away win in the top flight.

The former Sporting Lisbon star now has ten goals and four assists away from Old Trafford, meaning he has more goal involvements in his first 10 Premier League away matches than any player in the league’s history.

Everton had hit a bit of a rough patch in recent weeks after a bright start to the campaign, but it was Carlo Ancelotti’s men who drew first blood at Goodison Park.

Bernard fired the home side in front after 19 minutes, after a long kick forward from goalkeeper Pickford was knocked down by Calvert-Lewin.

But two goals in seven minutes from Bruno Fernandes – a header and a shot-cross that went right the way through – turned the game on its head in favour of the visitors heading into the break.

With no changes in the scoreline past the hour-mark, Ancelotti sent in Iwobi to replace Gylfi Sigurdsson as the home side searched for an equalizer.

Still, the hosts dominated the possession – rising up to 62℅ at one point – but couldn’t create any clear cut chances for Calvert-Lewin in attack.

Cavani then grabbed his first ever goal for United deep into stoppage time to secure all three points for the Red Devils.

Iwobi’s compatriot Odion Ighalo did make United’s matchday squad.
