Deji Sotona: Promising Youngster Quits Manchester United For Patrick Vieira’s Nice

The exciting teenager puts an end to his short stay in England to begin a new adventure with Les Aiglons in France

Ligue 1 side Nice have announced the signing of promising young forward Deji Sotona from Manchester United.

The 17-year-old turned down a professional contract offer from the Premier League club, opting instead to sign a deal that sees him join Patrick Vieira’s Nice.

Born in Waterford, Ireland, Sotona had been on United’s books as a scholar following a move from Mullingar Athletic.

The Ireland youth international impressed at Manchester United and was, revealed as the fastest player at the club last year.

The 17-year-old logged a top speed of 22.9mph, which was 1.2mph quicker than the second-fastest player, Diogo Dalot.

It was, therefore, no surprise that the Premier League giants offered Sotona a three-year deal to remain in England.

However, the enterprising left-footer, who can also play on the wings, rejected the terms amid considerable interest in his talents from elsewhere.

Nice are the beneficiaries of that decision, with the Ligue 1 side securing the services of a player they describe as “explosive and technical”.

Sotona will be a part of a Nice side set to play in the group stages of the Europa League this season after finishing fifth in the French top-flight under the guidance of Patrick Vieira.

In a statement announcing Sotona’s arrival, the club said: “OGC Nice is delighted to welcome a player with great potential who will join Patrick Vieira’s group this season.”

Sotona, who was born in Ireland to Nigerian parents, has represented the Republic of Ireland up to U16 level. He is still eligible to play for Nigeria.
