The German tactician has named three Europe-based shot-stoppers in the Nigerian squad preparing for the international friendly matches next month
Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu has given kudos to coach Gernot Rohr and his assistants for calling up the goalkeeping duo of Dele Alampasu and Matthew Yakubu to the national set-up ahead of the Tunisia and Côte d’Ivoire games to be played in Austria in October.
Rohr has faced frustrations in the goalkeeping development, trying out the likes of Daniel Akpeyi, Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Francis Uzoho and Maduka Okoye in his search for the Super Eagles number one gloves.
But with Uzoho still recuperating from a year-long layoff and Ezenwa inactive due to coronavirus-induced suspension of NPFL games, Rohr decided to invite former youth internationals Alampasu and Yakubu.
Shorunmu is pleased that the former Bordeaux manager continues to seek solutions to the team’s goalkeeping problems and the former Samsunspor goalie hopes that the newly invited goalkeepers will live up to expectations of the team’s handlers.
“We need to give kudos to the handlers of the team for making this invited, right now we are all spectators watching what is going on and what the goalkeepers will offer,” TodayNG quotes Shorunmu.
“Whoever is being invited into the team, I believe they are good due to the judgement of the coaches, now, it depends on the players to show their abilities to the coaches and the entire fans of football in Nigeria.”
Alampasu, 23, plays for Ventspils in the Latvian top division while Yakubu, 21, features for Slovak Super Lig side ŠKF Sered.
