Maja Reveals Why He Chose Nigeria Ahead Of England

The Bordeaux striker was eligible to play for England as he was born in the country, but he chose to represent his parents country

Josh Maja has revealed it was not a hard choice choosing between the Super Eagles of Nigeria ahead of the Three Lions of England.

Maja was born in England to Nigerian parents which made him eligible to play for the two countries. The former Sunderland striker revealed it has always been a dream to play on the international stage, and there was no doubt it would be for Nigeria.

The 21-year-old revealed he has always wanted to connect with his roots and has visited the country several occasions.

“Playing on an international stage was a dream of mine. To represent my country and make my family proud,” he told the BBC.

“I’m familiar with my roots. I went to Nigeria a few times when I was young, and in the next few years I’ll be going again.”

Maja cited the influence of former Super Eagles captain, Austin Jay-Jay Okocha in his career, saying the Bolton legend was one of his idols growing up.

Okocha was a hit with the Trotters during his time in the Premier League, and that had an impact on Maja.

“Okocha was a big icon and an example to many players, even outside of Nigeria,” says Maja.

“He had lots of qualities and performed well in the Premier League.”

Maja made his Super Eagles debut in a 2-2 draw against Ukraine last September.
