Bundesliga: Ujah, Abdullahi Sign Season Off In Style; Collins, Uduokhai Suffer Closing Day Defeat

Nigerian forward Anthony Ujah netted his fourth strike of the campaign to help Union Berlin claim an excellent 3-0 win at home to Fortuna Dusseldorf in the final round of matches of this season’s German Bundesliga.

The excellent Ujah also supplied the assist for Christian Gentner’s second goal before he was replaced by compatriot Suleiman Abdullahi in the second half.

The 23-year-old Nigerian forward then scored his first goal of the season in the closing stages to round off an impressive win for Berlin.

The Irons Ones were only promoted to the top flight via the play-offs last year and are now assured of at least another year at the highest level of German football.

Jamilu Collins endured another humiliating day in Germany as his already-relegated Paderborn side were flogged 3-2 by Eintracht Frankfurt.

The visitors, ravaged by injuries to key personnel, started the Super Eagles fullback among a three-man centre-back pairing, but it did little to halt the home side’s attacking vibes.

Frankfurt ran to a three-goal lead thanks to goals from Sebastian Rode, Andre Silva, and Dan Bost, but Paderborn fought back thrillingly in the final half-hour through Mohamed Draeger and Sven Michel.

It was, however, a little too late, as that has been the story for much of the campaign, for Collins and co.

It was also a most forgettable afternoon for new Super Eagles invitee, Kingsley Ehizibue after Cologne were thrashed 6-1 by Werder Bremen at the Wohninvest-Weser-Stadion.

Ehizibue received a yellow card in the second half for his troubles as their host scored thrice in the first half and another three in the second half to condemn the Billy Goats to one of their heaviest defeats of the season.

But Cologne promoted as 2. Bundesliga champions last season will remain in the top-flight next term, having secured their league status in the past few weeks.

Meanwhile, Chelsea-bound Timo Werner scored twice to lift Leipzig to a 2-1 win at Felix Uduokhai’s Augsburg.

Uduokhai, featuring in his 26th league match at the heart of the defence this term for the hosts, couldn’t tame Werner, who opened the scoring at the WWK Arena in the 28th minute.

The German international then bagged the winner in the 80th minute, eight minutes after Ruben Vargas equalized for Augsburg.
