The former Golden Eaglets star has struggled for most parts of the season but has improved since the league resumed from the coronavirus enforced break, and that’s changed Mainz position
Taiwo Awoniyi hopes of staying at Mainz beyond this season has received a massive boost after the club’s sporting director hinted they are considering taking him permanently.
Awoniyi is currently on loan at Mainz from Liverpool, a club he signed for in 2015. The 22-year-old initially struggled to find his feet with Die Nullfünfers, and there were even reports that the club were considering cutting his loan deal short.
However, Awoniyi has been able to take advantage of the break due to the coronavirus, and his form has improved since the league resumed.
Before the league was suspended, Awoniyi featured just six times in the Bundesliga with only one start. However, since the German top-flight resumed last month, Awoniyi has made three starts with two ninety minutes under his belt.
He also scored his first goal for Mainz in the 2-2 draw against Cologne last month. With the improvement in his performances, Mainz are considering opening talks with Liverpool over a permanent sale.

“I am very, very positive about him,” Mainz sporting director, Rouven Schroder, told Bild.
“Taiwo never let himself down, always had his head up, and the absolute will to improve was never negative. It is a symbol of how team sport works.
“We are in an exchange with Liverpool, that is an open position.
“We are now waiting for the last games. Then we’ll see what the next steps are.”
Schroder’s comments come after he criticised Awoniyi’s attitude recently.
