Revealed: The Latest About Rohr’s Future As Nigeria’s Manager

The former Bordeaux manager is currently close to signing a new contract, but there could still be an issue following the latest development from the Ministry of Sports

Gernot Rohr is set to sign a new contract extension that will keep him in charge of the Super Eagles till 2022. The 66-year-old’s current contract expires in June but has always expressed his interest to continue.

Initially, it was believed he would move on after the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) revealed he would have to accept new terms to earn a new deal.

But the German tactician does not have a problem with the new conditions and even received NFF’s proposal a few weeks ago.

Following a long drawn saga, it has now been announced that the former Burkina Faso manager will put pen to paper next week.

According to Lequipe, the NFF released a statement, saying Rohr’s contract talks will be finalised next week.

“The executive committee has mandated the secretary-general to liaise with Super Eagles technician Gernot Rohr to conclude all questions regarding his new contract in the coming week,” the NFF said in a statement released this Tuesday.

However, in another separate report, it’s believed that the Ministry of Sports is not satisfied with the decision to allow Rohr to continue in his post.

According to the Punch, the Sports Ministry want former Tottenham’s manager, Harry Redknapp, to take over from the German.

Soccernet had reported that the Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare, revealed his managerial choice for the national team.

While the Ministry does not have the power to remove Rohr, they are ready to bring in Redknapp should the former Bayern Munich star reject NFF’s offer.

Rohr was appointed as Super Eagles manager in 2016, and within this period, he led the team to the 2018 World Cup and 2019 Africa Cup of Nations where Nigeria finished in third place.
