Former Nigeria’s Goalkeeper Says Rohr Has Done Well

A host of former internationals are not impressed with the German’s performance over the last four years, but one of them admits the tactician deserves applause in a few areas

Joseph Dosu admits that the former Bordeaux manager has been able to forge a formidable national team for Nigeria, although he insists the German can do better.

There is a long list of ex-Eagles stars, including 1980 AFCON hero Segun Odegbami and former midfield dazzler Etim Esin, who has called for the Nigeria Football Federation to replace Rohr with a Nigerian coach.

The offence levelled against the one-time Gabon coach include not giving NPFL players chances in his team, not adding any impact to the local league, as well as his team not having a discernible playing style.

Despite his many critics, Rohr put pen to paper on a new two-and-a-half-year deal this week, a sign that his employers – the NFF – trust his ability to lead the Super Eagles to the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Former Reggiana shot-stopper Dosu has his reservations concerning Rohr but admits that the gaffer should be commended for building a stable, row-free, and formidable Super Eagles team.

“Well, he has brought stability to the team, which is what some of his predecessors also did,” Dosu told the Daily Trust.

“Asides that, his tenure has witnessed less agitation over match bonuses and allowances.

“He is also blending young and old players for a formidable Super Eagles.”

Echoing Benedict Akwuegbu’s difficult challenge for Rohr, Dosu also tasked the former Burkina Faso coach to aim for a semi-finals berth at the next World Cup.

“All some of us want is for him to do more to surpass the achievements of some of the indigenous coaches.

“If he wants to be counted among the Bonfrere Jos and Clemens Westerhof’s, he should get us to at least the semi-final of the World Cup and also win an African title with the Super Eagles.”
