Bundesliga Review: Bazee On Target But Disappointing Weekend For Other Nigerians

There was more action in the Bundesliga last weekend after it resumed from a coronavirus enforced break on May 16th.

The German top-flight became the first major league to resume in the middle of May after ten weeks without football due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Last weekend saw another round of exciting games with Bayern Munich maintaining their four-point lead over Borussia Dortmund.

The champions saw off the challenge of Eintracht Frankfurt with a 5-2 victory. Goals from Leon Goretzka, Thomas Muller, Robert Lewandowski, Alphonso Davies and a Martin Hinteregger own goal who also scored Frandkurt goals secured a comfortable win for the leaders.

The win restored Bayern’s four-point lead over Borussia Dortmund who had secured a win over Wolfsburg earlier on Saturday.

Raphael Guerreiro and Achraf Hakimi secured the three points for Lucien Favre’s men. Dortmund will have the chance to close the gap when they host Bayern in the Der Klassiker on Tuesday. 

Meanwhile, in other games, Augsburg stunned Schalke 04 at the Veltins Arena with a comprehensive 3-0 victory.

Nigeria’s Joel Sarenren-Bazee was among the scorers for Augsburg as they moved up to 12th place with the win.

A Timo Werner hat-trick plus goals from Yussuf Poulsen and Marcel Sabitzer helped RB Leipzig bounced back from last weekend’s disappointing draw with a win at Mainz.

Jules Nagelsmann’s side had fallen behind in the title race following a 1-1 draw with Freiburg, but they bounced back with a comfortable win over Die Nullfünfer at the Opel Arena.

Two Nigerians were on show for the two sides albeit as a substitute. Taiwo Awoniyi who scored his first league goal for Mainz last weekend was brought on for Jean-Paul Boetiu, while Nagelsmann introduced Ademola Lookman for Christopher Nkunku.

In other games involving Nigerian stars, Kingsley Ehizibue’s Cologne came back from two goals down to salvage a point at home against Fortuna Dusseldorf. 

Other results from last weekend include Bayer Leverkusen’s impressive win at Borussia Monchengladbach, Werder Bremen edging out Freiburg and Paderborn holding Hoffenheim.
