Reports: Brazilian Side Interested In John Mikel Obi

The former Super Eagles captain is currently without a club after leaving Trabzonspor due to his coronavirus comments.

John Mikel Obi’s football journey is set to take a train to South America after reports emerged that Brazilian side, Botafogo have opened negotiations with his team.

The former Chelsea star is now a free agent after his contract with Trabzonspor was terminated last month. The 32-year-old had a fallout with the club’s authorities following his criticism of Turkish Football officials over their refusal to suspend the Super Lig despite the Coronavirus outbreak.

Mikel went on Instagram to criticise the decision, and also refused to play. The fallout led to the termination of his contract even though the Super Lig has now been suspended indefinitely.

But according to Lance, Botafogo are set to offer Mikel an immediate return to football. The Brazilian side are searching for another world superstar following the arrival of Keisuke Honda.

They were previously in negotiations with former Manchester City star, Yaya Toure, but there was no breakthrough as they could not afford ex-Barcelona man’s wages.

However, knowing they could afford to pay Mikel’s wages, Botafogo opened discussions with Mikel’s team a few weeks ago.

But nothing is sealed yet as discussions are now on hold due to the coronavirus outbreak that has stalled football activities.
