Iheanacho Reveals His Favourite Position

The Nigeria international has often been deployed in the striking role but says he enjoys playing behind the striker.

Leicester City star, Kelechi Iheanacho has revealed he does not enjoy playing as a No 9, saying he feels more comfortable as an attacking midfielder.

Iheanacho started his career as a number 10, and it was in that position that he fully utilised his talents. The 23-year-old played as an attacking midfielder when the Golden Eaglets won the 2013 U-17 World Cup.

The Super Eagles star won the golden ball and the silver boot while playing just behind the striker in that tournament.

However, things changed for Iheanacho when he moved to Manchester City as he was deployed as a striker. It affected his development, and that contributed to his struggles at the Etihad stadium.

He later joined Leicester in 2017, but Iheanacho still never got the chance to feature in his favoured role. The 23-year-old failed to hit the ground running and it was not until last December that Iheanacho Foxes career truly kicked off.

Although he has scored eight times and provided three assists this season as a striker, Iheanacho insists he still sees himself as a ten.

Speaking in an Instagram live session on Funny Bone’s page, Iheanacho said: “The position that I am playing now, let me not lie, it pains me,” You know what just one goal means. Playing No 10 is good for me because you pass the ball and create chances. I really enjoy playing No.10.
