Balogun Expresses His Feelings On Delayed Super Eagles Return

The Wigan star was handed a recall to the Super Eagles squad for the AFCON qualifying clash against Sierra Leone, but the match has now been postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Leon Balogun has revealed he is not bothered after his Super Eagles return was halted due to the problem facing the world right now.

The 31-year-old last featured for Nigeria at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and his last call-up came in September.

Balogun lost his place in the Super Eagles due to lack of minutes at Brighton. The former Mainz defender featured just two times in cup competitions for the Seagulls this season.

However, he is enjoying his football again following a loan move to Wigan in January. Since he signed for the Latics, Balogun has featured six times, and Wigan has kept four clean sheets in four of those games.

With him playing regularly again, Super Eagles manager, Gernot Rohr named Balogun in his squad to face the Leone Stars.

But the match has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic the world is battling right now. Speaking in an interview with Tolu Olasoji, Balogun revealed he was looking towards the game, but insists it doesn’t bother him much as all football activities are also affected.

“It’s not a big difference to the general situation because we are just not allowed to play football,” Balogun said.

Obviously, it’s special because I haven’t been with the Super Eagles for the last three matches simply because I was not playing at all. I didn’t make the matchday squad at Brighton.

So, it was sad because I was looking forward to being back home in Nigeria again for some time. Enjoy good vibe, different vibe, nice weather, happy people like the group that the team is. I can’t even say ‘we were’ because not much has changed, just some few additions to the team.

“It’s always fun, and it’s just a different vibe, and I was looking forward to it, but I mean, it’s not that it’s never going to happen again, it’s just postponed, he added.
