The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced the appointment of former Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo as the new assistant manager of the Nigeria national team.
The former Everton defender replaces Imama Amapakabo who has been dismissed finally following his disappointing spell with the U-23 team and home-based Eagles.
Amapakabo was in charge of the Olympic Eagles’ dreadful U-23 Africa Cup of Nations Campaign which held in Egypt last year. The event which also doubles as the qualifiers for the football event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, saw the U-23 team crash out in the group stages.
As a result, Nigeria will not be represented at the football event of the 2020 Olympics. The 50-year-old Rivers state born tactician was also in charge of the home-based Eagles that failed to qualify for the 2020 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN), while the team also suffered an embarrassing early exit at the WAFU Cup.
With performances reaching an all-time low under him, the NFF has now decided to act by dismissing him from his role as Super Eagles’ assistant manager and replacing him with Joseph Yobo.
However, it is not known yet if Yobo will also take over his role as U-23 and home-based manager. Yobo made 101 appearances for the Super Eagles, making him the country’s record caps holder alongside Vincent Enyeama.
The 39-year-old glorious moment came when he captained Nigeria to her third Africa Cup of Nations title in 2013. He also represented the country at the 2002, 2010 and 2014 World Cups.
