Heracles striker Cyriel Dessers may have been given the biggest hint yet that he would be a part of the Super Eagles squad for the double-header against the Leone Stars next month.
Dessers has reportedly been issued a Nigerian passport and can now travel down to the country should coach Gernot Rohr extend an invitation to the striker.
According to a report from the Importance of Limburg via FcUpdate, the Dutch league’s top goalscorer, born to a Nigerian mother, obtained the West African nation’s citizenship green-book on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old, who was born in Leuven to a Belgian father, qualifies for Nigeria through his mother.
Dessers had earlier revealed his desire to star for the African giants, and he could have that dream fulfilled next month.
Three-time champions Nigeria host bottom side, Sierra Leone, in back-to-back 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying games in March, with the reverse fixture scheduled for the Siaka Stevens Stadium in Freetown.
The Super Eagles have maximum points from two matches – after wins over Benin at home and Lesotho away – to stay top of Group L.
With 14 goals and five assists this season, Dessers is one of Europe’s top marksmen. He will, therefore, hope his form pushes him into Gernot Rohr’s reckoning ahead of other Nigerian forwards like Victor Osimhen, Paul Onuachu, and Emmanuel Dennis.
