The Super Eagles star left boyhood club Arsenal to join Everton on deadline day last summer for 40m including add-ons. It has now been revealed Iwobi’s move was sanctioned by former Gunners boss Unai Emery because of Reiss Nelson.
According to Dailymail, the Gunners board planned to sell Nelson, but Emery stopped the move with the former Valencia manager calling for the sale of Iwobi instead.
Emery who has now been sacked by Arsenal was keen on keeping Nelson who attracted interest from Crystal Palace last summer. With the England youth star staying at the Emirates, Arsenal decided to ship Iwobi to Premier League rivals Everton.
It is a move that has played out perfectly for all parties with both Nelson and Iwobi enjoying more game time this season.
Despite Emery’s departure, Nelson has featured 14 times this season for the Gunners, while Iwobi has made 20 appearances for the Toffees, scoring two times.
