The second round draws for 2022 World Cup qualifiers Africa section took place today, and Super Eagles of Nigeria have been drawn in Group C.
The draws which held in Cairo on Tuesday will see Gernot Rohr’s men lock horns against Cape Verde, Central African Republic and Liberia.
In what looks like an easy draw on paper, the three-time African champions should have no problem in qualifying for the knockout round.
Cape Verde ranked 78th in the FIFA rankings, Central African Republic (109), and Liberia (152) should pose no threat to the Super Eagles.
It will not be the first time the Super Eagles will battle Liberia for the world cup ticket. Enroute to Korea/Japan in 2002, the Super Eagles and the Lone stars were drawn in the same group.
The Lone stars defeated the Super Eagles by two goals to one in Monrovia, before the Super Eagles earned a 2-0 win in the return leg at Lagos.
In other groups, AFCON champions, Algeria were drawn against Burkina Faso, Niger and Djibouti. Cameroon hold the record of most appearances at a FIFA World Cup, but they were placed in a difficult group.
The Indomitable Lions have been placed alongside Ivory Coast, Mozambique and Malawi. Ghana were paired against South Africa, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia.
Following the completion of this round, the ten group winners will be paired in a knockout tie, and winners from the knockout matches will represent Africa at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
