Former Ajax Star Tips Super Eagles To Top World Cup Qualifying Group

The Super Eagles will brush aside their group rivals, and make their 7th appearance at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar 2022, says former Nigeria international Tijani Babangida.

The three-time African champions were drawn in Group C with Cape Verde, Central African Republic and Liberia in the third round of the World Cup qualifying series. None of that trio has ever been to the Mundial, as a result, some tagged the group an easy one.

The coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, has called for caution, insisting that no team on the continent can be underrated.

But former Ajax Amsterdam winger, Babangida has expressed total optimism that the country’s national team have the capacity to steamroll every foe standing between her and a World Cup ticket.

Babangida, who took part in Nigeria’s 1998 World Cup campaign and scored the team’s only goal in the second-round defeat to Denmark, is convinced the Super Eagles will take advantage of having the luck of the draw.

“With due respect to our opponents, Nigeria will surely qualify from this group. There is no easy team in modern football but Nigeria now have a young team,” says the Atlanta ’96 Olympics hero as quoted by The Breaking Times.

“This qualifier will prepare the boys for the final stage. We couldn’t have wished for a group better than what we got. I am very optimistic,” he said.

Babangida made his international debut in 1994, participated in two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, and won the 1996 Olympics with Nigeria.
