Africa’s Best Player Reveals Next Target

Asisat Oshoala has revealed the target she aims to achieve in the next phase of her career after picking up the 2019 Confederation of African Football’s Women’s Player of the Year on Tuesday.

The Barcelona forward says the goal of becoming the best African women footballer will continue to drive her to work harder than before.

The Super Falcons captain became only the second woman in history to win the coveted CAF African Women’s Player of the Year award four times, following in the footsteps of legendary Nigeria heroine, Perpetua Nkwocha.

Nkwocha, who is the current manager of Clemensnäs IF in Sweden’s fourth tier, claimed the award back-to-back in 2004 and 2005 and again in 2010 and 2011.

Another win for Barcelona’s number 20, who was victorious in winning the award in 2014, 2016, and 2017, will take her Africa’s Best Player award haul to five, and earn her the tag of the continent’s greatest ever footballer.

While acknowledging her present incredible feat, Oshoala can’t wait to rewrite the history books.

“I am really excited – proud of myself, four times is something to always remember,” she told BBC Sport Africa.

“It keeps me going but of course there is still more work to do, I want to create my own history and not just equal someone else’s record – I’m going to give my best to create mine.”

The 25-year-old edged Valerenga and Cameroon forward Ajara Nchout as well as the 2018 winner Thembi Kgatlana who plays for Beijing BG Peonix and South Africa to the 2019 award.
