Transfers: Eternal Rivals Battle For Super Eagles Star’s Signature

The last has not been heard of the transfer saga involving Nigeria international and Monaco forward Henry Onyekuru.

Super Eagles forward Onyekuru is poised to move away from the Principality club when the January transfer window reopens but his destination is no longer certain.

Turkish champions Galatasaray were reportedly leading the race to bring back a player who, while on loan from Everton, produced 16 goals and six assists for the Lions en route to claiming their 22nd league title last season.

But it is shaping up to be the battle of the two most popular clubs in Turkey as Fenerbahce have reportedly joined the race to sign the 22-year-old.

Gala’s defence of their title is not going according to plans with Faith Terim’s men – who have scored a meagre 15 goals in 14 games – languishing in seventh position in the Super Liga, 7 points behind league leaders Sivasspor.

The Yellow-Reds have since opened negotiations with Monaco with the hope of securing the former Anderlecht star on an 18-month loan agreement. The Turkish giants are expected to cough out about 2 million euros as part of the loan deal.

In a new twist though, Fenerbahce have also expressed interest in snapping Onyekuru from the grasps of their bitter rivals Galatasaray. The Yellow Canaries are reportedly willing to part with 3 million euros in a bid to convince Monaco to sell them the Nigerian forward instead.

Unlike compatriot Victor Osimhen, Onyekuru has failed to settle in the French Ligue 1 since Monaco paid £12.5 million to sign the Nigerian international over the summer.

Partly due to injuries and partly due to the form of the duo of Wissam Ben Yedder and Islam Slimani, Onyekuru has only made two league starts for Leonardo Jardim’s side – and they both came in August.
